What You Can Make with the Leaves
Name Tags and Gift Labels
Write a name on the colored leaf with a pencil or fineliner. It becomes a coat room label, a place card or a gift tag.
A Garland Across the Whole Classroom
Paper weighs almost nothing, so even ordinary thread stretched across a window or bulletin board can hold a garland of thirty leaves. We do, however, recommend using fishing line, which doesn't sag.
Cards for Grandma and Grandpa
Glue the colored leaf onto folded paper. Because it's flat, the card closes easily and can be sent in an envelope.

How to Color a Paper Leaf
Working with paper is different from working with a wooden leaf – above all, be more careful with water.

Use absorbent paper underneath. Newspaper or a towel soaks up excess water so the leaf doesn't warp as much. A plastic tablecloth is a worse choice here than with wood.

Color it with whatever you have. Colored pencils and markers work right away and don't warp the paper at all. With watercolors, squeeze out the brush well – less water, richer color, no waves.

Draw in the veins. Once the paint is dry, you can draw in the veins with a pencil, fineliner or India ink. It's this detail that turns a leaf into a truly beautiful leaf. This technique is a bit more challenging, though.

Flatten a warped leaf under a book. Leave the finished leaves weighed down between two sheets of paper overnight. By morning they'll be flat and ready to glue.

Are the leaves colored or white?
White and untreated – they're meant for coloring yourself. If you're looking for leaves that come colored in the pack, choose the felt version in the same size.
What can I color them with?
With practically anything – watercolors, colored pencils, markers, crayons, tempera and stamps. Compared to watercolors, colored pencils and markers have the advantage of not wrinkling the paper at all, so they're the best fit for preschool.
Will watercolors make the paper warp?
A little, if you use a lot of water. A well-wrung brush and an absorbent mat help. Then just leave the finished leaves weighed down under a book overnight and they'll be flat again.
How are they different from the felt leaves?
Felt leaves are colored and ready to use right away; paper leaves are white for coloring and cost about half as much. You can also write on paper, so they're great for name tags and labels.
